The 6‑day West Highland Way is a faster end‑to‑end walk covering the full 96 miles of the route. This itinerary involves longer walking days and less recovery time than the 7‑day option and is best suited to experienced or well‑conditioned walkers. The route follows the traditional trail from Milngavie to Fort William.

Itineraries

Day 1

Milngavie to Drymen (12 miles/ 19.5 km)

Your walk begins in Milngavie, just outside Glasgow, where the West Highland Way heads north through parkland, woodland tracks, and open farmland. The route is well‑waymarked and gently introduces the terrain and pace of the trail. Passing through Mugdock Country Park and rolling countryside, you finish in the village of Drymen. This is a relatively straightforward first day, ideal for settling into the journey.

Day 2

Drymen to Rowardennan (14.5 miles/ 23 km)

Leaving Drymen, the route climbs gradually onto the lower slopes of Conic Hill, providing wide views over Loch Lomond and its islands. After descending towards Balmaha, the path follows the eastern shore of the loch through forest and lochside trails. The walking becomes more varied underfoot as the day progresses. You finish at Rowardennan, at the head of the loch, surrounded by increasingly Highland scenery.

Day 3

Rowardennan to Tyndrum (20.5 miles / 33 km)

This is a longer and more demanding day, following the rugged eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Narrow paths, tree roots, short climbs, and rocky sections make progress slower, but the scenery is some of the most dramatic on the route. Beyond Inverarnan, the terrain opens out as the trail enters Strath Fillan. The day ends in Tyndrum, a small settlement well used by long‑distance walkers.

Day 4

Tyndrum to Kingshouse (19 miles/ 30.5 km)

Today is one of the classic West Highland Way stages, crossing the exposed and atmospheric Rannoch Moor. The route follows old military roads and broad tracks through a vast, remote landscape of moorland and mountains. This is the longest stage of the itinerary and requires steady pacing and good preparation. You finish at Kingshouse, with views of Buachaille Etive Mòr dominating the skyline.

Day 5

Kingshouse to Kinlochleven (9 miles / 14.5 km)

The day begins with a gentle ascent through Glencoe before climbing the Devil’s Staircase, the highest point on the West Highland Way. From the top, there are sweeping views back across Glen Coe and ahead towards the Mamores. A long descent follows into Kinlochleven, once an industrial village and now a key overnight stop for walkers. Despite the climb, the walking is mostly on clear, well‑built paths.

Day 6

Kinlochleven to Fort William (15 miles / 24 km)

The final day climbs steadily out of Kinlochleven onto remote hillside paths, offering a quieter and more reflective stage. Forest tracks and glen paths lead north as Ben Nevis and the surrounding peaks gradually come into view. The route descends into Glen Nevis before finishing in Fort William, traditionally marked by the Way’s end point in the town centre. This completes the full 96‑mile West Highland Way from Lowlands to Highlands.
